Drivers engage in dangerous habits during all months of the year. However, with the holidays comes an upsurge of traffic and environmental factors.
When inclement weather strikes, Columbus roadways can become dangerous. As we discussed last month, shorter days and more nighttime driving decreases visibility and increases the likelihood of drowsy driving. These factors and more can be a recipe for disaster.
In comparison to other holidays through the year, Christmas and New Year’s ranked low between 2011 and 2015 when it came to traffic fatalities. However, the risks on each day still remain relatively high when compared to the average number of fatalities on any given day.
What to watch out for this holiday season
EHS Today has identified four of the most dangerous driving hazards you may face during the holiday season. These include:
- Distracted driving: Many drivers have a lot going on this time of year and will often try to multitask. This most commonly includes using handheld devices while driving.
- Impaired driving: The holidays bring frequent celebrations which often involves alcoholic beverages. In some cases, drug use may be involved. While law enforcement may take measures to keep our roads safe, they don’t catch all drivers who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
- Pressured driving: The holidays can be stressful for some people, which can manifest through excessive speeding and aggressive driving on Columbus roadways.
- Fatigued driving: With tight schedules, many Columbus drivers might get less sleep during the holiday season. The EHS Today article cites a study by AAA that found sleeping less than five hours in a day can increase the risk of a fatigued driving crash by four to five times. The use of alcohol and late-night celebrations can also be a factor in fatigued driving.
