Lawyer Reminding People To Stay Safe During Saint Patrick’s Day in Ohio

Many Columbus-area residents and visitors will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. It’s a fun time for family and friends to congregate and enjoy the holiday festivities. For many, Saint Patrick’s Day means a night out drinking. While this seems inevitable, mixing alcohol with getting behind the wheel can have serious and fatal consequences.

According to WalletHub, the average rate at which drunk driving causes a fatality during the holiday is every 36 minutes. In fact, Saint Patrick’s Day is the 4th most popular day to consume alcohol – just behind Fourth of July, Christmas, and New Year’s.

Additionally, Ohio State Highway Patrol statistics report that our state had a total of 379 fatal OVI (operating a vehicle under the influence) crashes, which resulted in 405 deaths.

Are Drunk Driving Accidents Really ” Accidents?”

NBC4i cites an alcohol-related head-on collision last year that took the life of an 18-year-old college student who was home for spring break. The driver who caused the crash registered a blood alcohol content level of .14, which is almost twice the legal limit.

The victim’s sister was also in the car at the time of the crash but survived. Regarding the car accident, she said, “It is not an accident.  Someone does not take a drink of alcohol and then accidentally put the keys in the ignition of a three-ton-weapon. In the end, it is a choice.”

In order to promote safety during Saint Patrick’s Day, many of the Columbus area Irish pubs have been encouraging anyone who plans to consume alcohol to stay off the road.

One Columbus pub has offered patrons who have consumed too much alcohol taxi vouchers and Uber discounts. The owner has also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with owning a bar. He urges anyone who plans on drinking to leave their vehicle at home and take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the pub. Doing so takes away the option to drive after having too much to drink.
